T-Com, Stuttgart: everything under control at the heart of the network

T-Com, the landline division of Deutsche Telekom, is one of Europe’s largest fixed-network providers. Its state-of-the-art network infrastructure is the cornerstone of T-Com’s business. Consisting of about 195,000 kilometers of glass fiber and an IP network that transfers some 35,000 terabytes of data per month, the network nodes span urban and remote areas across Germany. To provide reliable visualization of the gigantic data streams, a new cube wall by Mitsubishi Electric was installed in September 2004 at T-Com in Stuttgart. Mitsubishi Electric, based in Ratingen, manufactures display cubes and specializes in complete cube walls for control rooms and master displays.

At T-Com’s Network Operation Center (NOC) in Stuttgart, the same movie plays over and over – 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But the show is still interesting for the 50 operators, who watch over network availability in three shifts. If their systems are threatened by bottlenecks, red points light up on the giant world map. The operators must then act quickly and connect, bundle or reroute lines as the case may be. T-Com promises its customers high network performance any time day or night, and they make it happen.

Since September, NOC operators have been using a new 25 square meters cube wall by Mitsubishi Electric that shows them the operational status and load of the various networks at a glance. In cooperation with q-bus Mediatektur, the system integrator managing the project, Mitsubishi Electric organized the dismantling of the old set of 39 interlinked 50" cube monitors and built the new wall. 18 new XGA display cubes of type VS-67XL20U were installed, with screen diagonals of 67". T-Com had chosen this particular model for its high image quality and simple handling.

Complete cube wall replacement in just three weeks
At the beginning of September, Mitsubishi Electric started taking down the old system, aided by VS Fickenscher, a Nuernberg event technology company. q-bus Mediatektur, specialists in image wall solutions and technology, installed the base frames for the projectors. The new system had to be specially adapted to the available space, since the existing, permanently wall-mounted cube base had to be reused. The changeover from 50" to 67" monitors left vertical and horizontal gaps which were closed by custom-built base frames. Mitsubishi Electric was able to start the actual cube wall installation almost simultaneously. In mid-September q-bus implemented the computer and network hardware and configured the network switch. To complete the installation, Mitsubishi Electric adjusted the image colour and geometry of the display screens. Meanwhile q-bus integrated T-Com’s software and started its user training sessions for T-Com employees. On September 23 the new cube wall was commissioned and ready to go live.

Benefits
The new wall creates ideal working conditions for NOC operators: the overall picture is homogeneous – variations in colour and brightness within images displayed across multiple screens are a thing of the past. Thanks to the VS-67XL20U cubes from Mitsubishi Electric’s XL series, picture transitions are smooth and colour shifts look natural across the entire cube wall surface. The gap width of just two millimeters gives an excellent overall presentation. Digital Color Space Control compensates for colour divergences, while Dynamic Brightness Balancing ensures that the picture remains consistently bright over long periods of operation. Half-tones are shown in perfect gradation between light and dark areas. After lamp replacements the Smart Lamp System detects the brightness of the new lamp, and the cubes automatically adjust their brightness to maintain a homogeneous picture. Screen reflections can be a major hindrance for operators, but the matte surface and high contrast rate (1,300:1) of VS-67XL20U display cubes reduce reflected glare to a minimum.
